Issues

This page contains a reference of all the currently issued 'Dark Inventions' publications, (chapter samplers, uncorrected proofs, first edition first impression, first edition second impression, A3+ and A4 art prints) together with tips on how to identify the genuine article.

Sample Chapters

Each chapter sampler consists of a back and front cover image printed on transparency material. These look really quite stunning, and obviously match the volume from which the chapter has been drawn. Inside, there is a title page showing the quadric mandala, at the centre of which is an element for either earth, water, fire, air or quintessence. In addition this page is signed, numbered 1/5, 2/5 etc., and dated with the month and year of issue. There is also a thumbprint to confirm that you have the genuine article, the colour of ink matching the colour of the element symbol. The frontispiece and illustration are printed using archival pigment inks on Somerset Velvet Art paper. The text pages are printed on archival matt heavyweight paper, and all pages, regardless of content are supplied un-punched, in order to allow the purchaser the option to mount and frame them. The number of pages shown in the table below does not match the number of pages that the chapter occupies in the book, since the samplers are printed on A4 media.

Here's the frontispiece and the illustration from the 'earth' sampler for the chapter entitled "The Grobbley Manuscript"

Farperoo Cover Design

There are a number of differences when comparing the proof to the main print run. The most obvious of these is the cover. The proof has the brown 'leather' cover we've all got used to seeing (including me), whereas the main print run books will have a green leather cover. The idea is that the colours of the covers will key in to associated 'element' colour, which in the case of Farperoo is green, associated with the scarab beetle symbol. In keeping with the colour co-ordination theme, the endpapers will be dark green in the main run books (whereas they are plain white in the proof). Internally there are text differences between proof and final (the corrections), and there are a certain number of differences in the illustrations. For instance, in the chapter entitled 'The Fifth Gate' the angel has a halo in the proof, but not in the actual book.

The main feature of the proof though might well be described as an 'accident'. Due to my inexperience with these things I had assumed that the proof for a hardback would naturally itself be a hardback - and so that's what I ordered! Apparently this is most unusual, and so will make these a bit of a rarity.
